Airbnb in Lyon: the rules to know in 2026
Letting a furnished tourist rental in Lyon is regulated. Here is the essence of what the City requires, checked against its official pages on 18 September 2026, and who to contact about your own case.

Your main home: 90 days a year
If you let the home you live in, an online declaration to the City of Lyon is enough: you get a registration number straight away, and you may let it for up to 90 days a year, with no other formality.
This number must appear on every one of your listings.
Another property: change of use
For a property that is not your main home, a registration number does not authorise anything on its own. You must own the property and first apply for a change of use (“changement d'usage”).
Outside the city centre, the rule depends on the floor area:
- from 35 m², compensation is required from the first square metre: converting into housing premises of the same area (within 5 %), in the same district — an office or a shop, for instance;
- below 35 m², the number and duration of authorisations are limited.
For an individual, the temporary change-of-use authorisation is granted for nine years and cannot be renewed. For a company, compensation is required from the first square metre. In the city centre, check directly with the City's Housing department.
In a co-owned building: inform the building manager
You must inform the building manager (“syndic”) of your tourist rental declaration; they add an information item to the agenda of the next general meeting (article 9-2 of the law of 10 July 1965, created by the law of 19 November 2024). Check what your building regulations say too.
What changes at the end of 2026: API Meublés
A national online service, “API Meublés”, is due to open in the fourth quarter of 2026 for registering furnished tourist rentals. Until then, declaring on the City of Lyon's online service remains compulsory.
Booking platforms also pass certain information about your activity — registration number, address, number of nights let — to this national platform, without you having to do anything.
Tourist tax
It is collected by the Métropole de Lyon, which offers an online service to declare and pay it.
